13 of 13 people found the following review helpful5.0 out of 5 starsFound a New Security Software PackagePrior to this I was an avid Kaspersky user. Recently I had noticed some odd things on my computer. After running a scan with Kaspersky which was supposed to be protecting me real time a trojan was found. I let Kas. take care of it and thought nothing more about it.

It was coming up for renewal, so I searched reviews on PCMag and other places. The Webroot was rated very well compared with Kaspersky. The price at Amazon was too good to beat, so I took the plunge. After installing and running through the update, I ran the first scan. It found several cookies and another trojan that Kaspersky failed to protect me from.

I have noticed that the Webroot Security Essentials blocks alot of suspicious javascript and css files when visiting red district websites. I would highly recommend this over Kaspersky. The interface is seamless and pretty well hands off unless you want to tweak the settings. I decided to let the program handle the recommended settings and I feel much safer than I did with my old antivirus software.

I have used Webroot s spyware program for years and always found it to be top notch and reasonably priced. As Comcast Cable subscribers we have access to free AV software which was originally Mcafee until they switched to Norton a while back. Both did their job fairly well and except for one instance where something was able to slip through, I found them to be adequate for my needs. Lately, I started to experience some lock-ups and sluggishness while on the net and after doing all of the typical diagnostic procedures I realized that the Norton AV was running a little more heavier in the background than I would like, and though this was being done for my benefit, was causing me problems in day to day use. As I said, I always found Webroot SpySweeper to be a great product and decided to take a look into their AV offerings. After learning that they do not produce their own AV program, I checked out the company who they collaborate with and found them to be a big player in the commercial AV field with their software being used by many large corporations. I also checked them out on the sites of the organizations who do professional AV testing and found them to always be at the top or near the top in every test. That pretty much sealed the deal for me and gave me the confidence that the AV component of the suite was able to meet the challenge. So far I have not been disappointed, I have found that the program runs extremely quieter than my previous AV programs and the lock-ups and sluggishness have pretty much disappeared. The interface is easy to use and the program does a great job in both blocking and alerting you about suspicious sites. I also like the fact that when doing a search on Google a check mark is placed next to all of the sites that the software considers safe. All in all a very good product at a very reasonable cost. I paid about 21. bucks for the three user version which is less than 7. bucks a machine for an extremely competent program. Free you say.. My feelings on this are that if I go out and invest hundreds of dollars in a decent laptop or desktop, I would have to be pretty much either a fool, or one cheap SOB not to invest another 7.00 to protect that machine from those who are trying to render it useless. One more thing, it is not recommended that you run 2 competing AV programs at once, so if you purchase this one be sure to uninstall your current AV program.

I m generally pleased with WISE since it does not slow my computer down. The only complaints I have is that WISE S antivirus and spyware protection is slow to get switched on after my computer is turned on. Also, security scans take about an hour; I would prefer 30-40 minutes to do a scan. I would recommend Webroot to other computer users.

However, think twice before accepting Webroot s automatic renewal option. Thirty days before expiring, a large warning box opens on your screen. The only options are to Renew Now or Learn More. Clicking on Renew Now leads to a screen where the price is almost double, what you would pay for the product on various on-line stores. There is no option to ignore the reminder and get rid of the warning box short of dragging it mostly off the screen while you explore your options. From Learn More you can opt out of the automatic renewal function, but certainly a long way around to getting the reminder off your screen.

Good software, tarnished by a strong-armed policy for renewal.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful2.0 out of 5 starsBasic Security with horrible optionsI used to like webroot back in their very early days when spysweeper was their main product and it worked well. After so many years the quality has dropped off dramatically in their products. The firewall is a joke and has hardly any usable controls. The scanner was a huge resource hog even more so then other products on the market. I thought that the eraser would act like webroots other standalone window washer product, I was wrong and their is not a way to change how many times it overwrites data. I am disappointed with this product, if you have someone in your family who finds using different products to manage their security difficult this may be a solution for you. However, for anyone who is used to having separate software applications that handles your firewall, privacy, and data protection needs you should probably stick to that.

I would not recommend this product nor will I buy another webroot product.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful5.0 out of 5 starsLaptop User-No problemsI installed Essentials via the CD on a Gateway laptop with 4 gb of ram, an Intel Duo Core CPU 2ghz, with Windows 7 32 bit. I ve had it on the laptop for nearly a year now and have not encountered any unusual slowdowns or installation issues some of the other users have encountered. I have not received any viruses or malware I do check with other software now and then just to make sure since installing Essentials. I do not use the backup feature.

Pros: Works as promised. Has kept my system clean for nearly a year. No slowdowns.

Cons: It costs money. There may be free programs out there, but I was willing to pay 35 for software that actually works.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful5.0 out of 5 starsLove Webroot.

I ve had WR for 3 years now. It has intercepted every virus/trojan that I ve inconviniently gotten my computer exposed to. It even wipes out spyware and adware that gets on the system when you go to internet pages. Even when the virus is taking down my computer, Webroot finds it, extracts it and deletes it and my computer is back to normal. I don t know how many times I have thanked my Webroot for it s services. I m buying it every year.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful1.0 out of 5 starsIs there a minus 5 stars.I bought this product for two reasons. The first and main reason was for Window Washer. I had it on a previous computer and it was great for cleaning up my computer and speeding up things and the second was the great reviews. What am I missing here. I downloaded it and it has gummed up my computer so bad it is slowerer than before and I keep getting popups trying to sell me upgrades that I can t get rid of unless I buy them and then the codes don t work after I make the purchase which make them useless. This all happened over the holidays and I didn t have time to mess with figuring it all out so I took it all off my computer to deal with later. I reloaded the software and still haven t figured it out so I contacted the company for a refund and am informed that it is too late to get all but 29.95 of my almost 130 it forced me into spending so in short I am SOL for almost 100. I am so happy for the rest of you but buyer beware if all you want is a simple solution to a problem. You may get a big, expensive problem. Hard lesson learned I guess.

Update 2/14/12. Since posting this review, my complaint to the company which resulted in a reply saying it was too late to get a refund has changed to them changing their mind and they have decided to refund all of the money I paid. I am quite happy about this. I am sorry the product didn t work and gave me so many problems but am glad I m not out nearly 130. I appreciate their honesty.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful1.0 out of 5 starsperhaps ok for a newer computer

I purchased this software with the intent of installing it on 3 of my computers. I installed it on my newest computer running windows 7 and that seemed to go ok but they had the audacity to add a tool bar to my web browser without letting me opt out, which annoyed me. I did a system scan and it worked, so I was happy. i then installed it on my slightly older computer running windows xp sp3 which is supported by this software. During the install it had some trouble downloading a file from the server but seemed to work after a retry. It then asked me to reboot my computer. After the reboot my computer could not get windows to load. I eventually had to go into safe mode to get past the problem. I was unable to get the problem to go away however and decided to uninstall the program. It would not even let me uninstall the program. It gives me some error message saying it is unable to do so. This computer is now completely immobilized and useless. I am probably going to have to wipe the whole thing and reinstall the os now. The only good this is that they have a 30 day money back guarantee which I plan to make use of.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful3.0 out of 5 starsAmazon Webroot Purchase

Prior to the purchase of this product, I was running Webroot Security Essentials on two computers. When I tried to install this product, I received a message that the new program was older than the one I was running for a year and needed to deinstall the old program before installing the new program. One deinstalled fine. The other did not and I needed to get extensive instructions from Webroot. There was no indication on the Amazon site that this was an out of date version.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful5.0 out of 5 starsWebroot Internet Security Essentials WISE for Windows

Been using Webroot products for 3 years on 32 bit Windows XP machines with no problems. I found it to be much less of a resource hog than Norton. The 2011 version has been simplified to take care of business in the background with minimal user interface once you get it set up also relatively easy. You can find pricing around the net significantly lower 60 or more than direct from Webroot. Good product.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful4.0 out of 5 starsWebroot Internet Security Essentials

This is an extremely good product. I used Webroot antivirus software and decided to purchase The webroot internet security essentials. I had used Kaspersky antivirus software but found it was not working properly to my expectations so I decided to purchase Webroot. This is a great product for any persons looking for a good virus protection.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful1.0 out of 5 starsSystem Hog

System Ram Hog. Loaded on Laptop with 1 gig of Ram and now takes forever for a web page to load. Don t buy it if you don t have a newer computer with more ram. Also won t open online PDF s, even after accepting the risk. Throws you back several screens and makes life misserable. I won t be purchasing Webroot products anymore.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful2.0 out of 5 starsJust okay

My computer is now slower than EVER since I installed the newest version of Webroot Internet Security Essentials. I am sorry I bought a three subscription as it has been great in the past but now I am stuck with it and would like to receive a refund as I am not happy with it at all.

I DID NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT FROM AMAZON I GOT IT DIRECTLY FROM WEBROOT What Follows Is the history of this product I had been a user of Webroot products since 2005 Spysweeper, Window Washer, Firewall and Accelerate support at that time was great, products ran well very little software overheadThen I started using Internet Security essentials ISE in 2009 most problems at that time were not major and I was able to work thru or around them myself Allowed Webroot to update my computer with Internet Security Essentials 2012 the real problems started a job that ran under the older version of ISE which took about 1 to 3 minutes now took 1 1/2 to 2 hours After removing some functions in ISE it did not help, decided to uninstall ISE During uninstall it asks you if you want to conrtact Tech Support for help or provide a E-mail message to quality support which I outlined the problems that I have had, it has been over a month ago and still have not had a responce I suspect that they were aware of the SHODDY QUALITY TESTING OF THIS PRODUCT I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A WEBROOT PRODUCT AGAIN NOR RECOMEND ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS TO ANYBODY. After uninstall and installation of a different software product it now take 30 seconds to 1 minute to run the same program

Have used Webroot products for years. The new Essentials runs seamlessly and unobtrusively in the background to protect my laptop and PC. No hassle. Good product.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful1.0 out of 5 starsI think they KNOW it s a bad product

Don t buy this product. I installed it on my desktop and immediately began having problems. I contacted them, and their Customer Service folks, while VERY responsive, could never help me, and even suggested that I DISABLE some of the functionality of the product so it would stop interfering with my browsers and screwing up my shutdowns. They of course blamed my hardware, too.In the end, they kind of just ran out of suggestions. I probably spent 10-12 hours downloading and running the tests and doing all the stuff they asked me to do. Really a long, infuriating period of difficulty. Full disclosure - it works really well on my laptop after an initial problem requiring re-installation. Back to Norton, I guess.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful2.0 out of 5 starsWebroot Essentials - mixed bag

We ve used Webroot for years and recently upgraded three machines to Essentials. In theory, this was to provide even more protection. In reality, a number of issues arose, requiring user decisions to allow or disallow programs about which they were unfamiliar, as well as firewall and other Internet connectivity issues when the users chose poorly. Support was cumbersome with required logging and reporting that was also above users heads. In the end, we disabled certain functionality and are essentially back to the basic Webroot services we have known and trusted. Overall, this was the upgrade that wasn t for us.1.0 out of 5 starsTotally worthless.

I was given this software with the purchase of my Dell Laptop and within 24 hours my computer crashed from a virus. Luckily I was able to find a system restore option that allowed me to wipe my hard drive, reinstall windows, and reset to factory defaults, which also cleared Webroot from my system. Since the product code had been used, I wasn t able to re-install it. Given how utterly worthless it was, I just threw it in the trash. Switched to another antivirus program and haven t had any issues since. I would strongly recommend using anything other than Webroot.5.0 out of 5 starsInstalled slow but works great with superior simlplicity

Webroot takes a little while to scan and install but all in all is a great antivirus and security suite. my computer sony vaio e series hasn t slowed down the slightest that i notice. Im a student and use my computer daily for research, writing and basic web browsing. Webroot is the most simplest security suites to use and the extra online secure storage really comes in handy for backup. recommend

After purchasing Essentials 2010, Webroot offered me this version as a free update. I would give Essentials 2010 a 4-star rating because it s a decent security suite, though not quite customizable enough for me. I haven t seen any improvements in this version, but have encountered two significant to me short comings.

1. Scheduled full-system virus scans don t run. No matter what day or time I set it, the full scan doesn t get executed, so after a week the software complains reminds me a scan is overdue. I ve been working with tech support for a week via e-mail, and I think it s close to being resolved. The last message I received blamed Microsoft Task Scheduler or whatever it s called and gave me a link to download a work around they created. Will see how that goes.

2. Firewall is blocking my computer from connecting to an external hard drive connected to my router. In Essentials 2010, I could re-configure the firewall to a learning mode for 2 weeks, every 3 weeks. This wasn t optimal would have liked to be able to configure it to allow that port to work all the time but I still had the sense that part of the firewall was still operational and guarding against intrusion. In this version, I have to disable the firewall completely while the backup runs. I ve also been working with tech support on this issue for a week, but haven t heard more from them for a few days--optimistically because they re studying the problem.

On the plus side, the full scan does often find undesirable cookies that I can remove. I do find it odd that it doesn t tell me about these cookies while I m browsing. Also, the scanner isn t consuming resources outside of the full scans with hidden background processing--something I ve encountered with other suites.

The suite is consistent. The pros and cons are the same whether I m running my 32-bit Vista notebook or 64-bit Win7 desktop, and so is the interface. If the problems didn t interfere so much with may daily use, I d consider renewing the license when it expires in 240 or so days. If these issues don t bother you, then I would recommend it. I d also recommend McAfee and Norton based on past experiences with them. More recently, I tried CA Technologies virus software, but can t recommend it. With a bit of effort, I could configure it for my backup, but it constantly consumed resources on the Vista notebook to the point where I needed to disable the virus scanner just to open an application, whether it was a web browser or Windows calculator.
